4 Basic Essentials of Livestock Handling Equipment To Help Your Goat Operation Thrive

Have you started running a goat operation? If so, you’ll need dependable, quality livestock gear to help your animals and your business thrive. Our D-S Livestock equipment company has been helping goat farmers and livestock producers raise goats for many years now. There are some basic, essential equipment items you should have if you are new to a livestock operation. Our experienced team offers options for running a successful goat operation.

1 – Quality Feeders

Keeping goats healthy means feeding them quality food with easy-to-access equipment. Perusing the market you’ll typically come across bale feeders, hay baskets and troughs to supply the basics. Our livestock team recommends using a combination feeder that allows you to provide your goats with both the hay and grain they need in just one piece of equipment. Depending on the weather in your location, keeping rain and moisture out of your goats feed may also be a factor. We have feeders that provide protection from the elements wherever your feeders are located.

2 – Handling Systems

The choice of handling systems ranges from basic to complex, and choosing the right one for your operation can make the day-to-day tasks run more efficiently. Our handling systems offer components that make sorting, deworming, inspecting and tagging your goats simple, easy and safe (for your handlers and goats alike).

3 – Weighing Equipment

Regularly weighing your goats supports your business by helping you track the health of each individual goat. Knowing the weight of each goat allows you to more accurately calculate the dosage of any medication they need, keep food rations balanced and be able to track weight gain to make adjustments as needed.

4 – Work Tables

Having a work table is vital for your goat operation. Without it handling, flipping and keeping your goat standing still can be a challenge. Our D-S livestock business offers work tables and station options to help you keep your goats and your workers safe. Work tables keep your goat upright and secure so it can be safely flipped with minimal hassle.

It’s That Time of the Year Again for Moving Livestock to Their Winter Location

It’s that time of seasonal transition again when livestock operations begin moving their herds over to shelter on winter grounds, especially for those operations in the northern latitudes. When moving herds around you want to limit the stress of the animals as much as possible. This helps ensure they stay healthy and strong during the migration. You want to be prepared with the sorting, loading and hauling process to maintain your profits as well as your livestock’s health.

Our D-S Livestock Equipment facility located in Frostburg, Maryland have been helping clients around the world with their equipment needs for goat, sheep and cattle operations since 1982. We have a quick turnaround time for an efficient delivery time, both in the U.S. and internationally, thanks to our large inventory.

We offer the LR96 portable loading ramp that loads groups of sheep and goats. It comes with 10-inch wheels to help your animals keep their balance so they can move easily and more comfortably when transporting into a livestock trailer. With five height settings, it can be adjusted (depending on the loading area) while keeping an anxious animal from turning around.

In addition, when you want to move small groups of sheep or goats, our truck boxes can help. Available in three sizes – the TR36, TR46 and TR48 have a 24-inch wide door with a latch that is spring-loaded. The tightly spaced bars help keep a smaller animal from getting their head or legs stuck and can be installed in a truck box in minutes, and then disassembled again for storage when the animals are loaded and hauled to their winter destination.

If you need high-quality loading and hauling equipment for your livestock operation for the fall transition, we welcome you to call 800-949-9997. Our experienced representatives at D-S Livestock Handling Equipment are here to help you with your livestock operation!

Is It Time to Trim Your Livestock’s Hooves?

Do you need to trim your livestock’s hooves again? This procedure is a necessity with any livestock operation, whether you have goats or sheep. At D-S Livestock Equipment we provide work tables and workstations to make your livestock operation run smoothly and can ship livestock handling equipment anywhere around the world. You can trust that our equipment delivers top quality performance at competitive prices. Our huge inventory and experienced team have a fast turnaround to keep your livestock operation on track.

When your animals require special handling such as hoof trimming, you want to make sure both the animal and the handlers are safe to prevent possible injury. Sometimes an animal can get skittish or balk at this necessary procedure, so making sure you have the right equipment can protect the handler as well as the animal and lessen the stress. So many of our customers have appreciated the value of our Turn O’Matic workstation, the TM5000.

This high-quality work station loads the animal safely into the chute enclosure so that it can be immobilized by squeezing them gently with the push of a button. Once they are secured, the lift feature can be employed to lift them up and turn them onto their side comfortably where you release the drop-away floor so their hooves can be trimmed easily.

This work station can hold a goat or sheep (also those with horns) weighing up to 310 pounds, while the TM5000-2G can handle livestock weighing up to 400 pounds. Once the trimming is complete, you simply rotate the floor back in place, push the button again, and the unit will rotate down so you can release your animal with ease. Trimming your livestock’s hooves has never been easier!

Whether you are looking for livestock equipment for your goat, sheep, or cattle operation, we can ship what you need quickly anywhere in the U.S. or around the world. We welcome you to call 800-949-9997 to speak to one of our friendly representatives at D-S Livestock Handling Equipment in Frostburg, Maryland. Are You Ready for the Winter Kidding Season?

As the calendar nears the end of yet another seasonal cycle, it’s now almost time for winter kidding for your goat operation. At D-S Livestock Equipment, we have the equipment you need to keep your nanny and her offspring as comfortable as possible during this stressful period. With winter birthing for goats – who are smaller and have very little insulation compared to lambs and calves – we know that when the temperatures plummet, you will want to be prepared for your nanny and her kids and have the process run as efficiently as possible.

When temperatures drop below freezing the kids need to be dried quickly to avoid chilling and possible hypothermia. You don’t want one of the kids to lose a tip of an ear to frostbite or death. We supply high-quality panels, grafting boxes doors and pen components that can make your winter goat kidding operation run smoothly.

We offer lambing and kidding panels in various heights to fit your needs. They are strong even though they are also lightweight, and you can design your pens to range anywhere from 4×4 to 6×6 feet and use 7/16-inch rods. All panels are 41 inches high. The panel sizes come in 4 feet, 5 feet, or 6 feet tall and weigh 25 lbs., 30 lbs. or 33 lbs. respectively. Our creep doors have adjustable rollers with doors that open and close readily for easy access. Our creep panels have a spring-loaded latch and are hinged inside a heavy steel frame, with the doors opening both ways.

With the lamb and goat creep panels, the vertical and horizontal bars can be adjusted in both width and height. You can also add or take out rollers. You can place your pens against a wall or back to back as needed and our grafting box is readily connected to the pens. You can also attach the grafting box to the kidding panels to keep a nanny in position if one of her kids has a rejection problem and still needs to nurse. With the grafting box the nanny may be stood up or adjusted for longer periods should she need to lie down. The grafting box is highly portable as well so you can move it from pen to pen as needed. When it comes to our products, our goal is to strive for ease of use along with convenience.

If you have a goat operation and are looking for the right equipment to help you with your winter kidding, just call 800-949-9997 and talk to a representative at D-S Livestock Handling Equipment.
